Grassroots Initiatives
Peggy Chan and Joel Thomas
Since the inception of Grassroots Pantry in 2012, Peggy established her restaurant as a training ground for young F&B professionals ready and willing to challenge conventional foodservice operations. The award-winning plant-based restaurant was recognised by the UNSDG ESCAP in 2019 as a best practice case study and achieved the HK Awards for Environmental Excellence in the Service Industry. An authority on food sustainability in Asia and a CISL* CPD certified professional in Net Zero strategies, Peggy developed the Grassroots Initiatives Consultancy to assist food service professionals in their transition towards best practices that meets both human and planetary health goals.
Joel is a hospitality industry veteran with over 25 years experience in front of house operations. He joined Grassroots in the spring of 2018 as Operations Manager and since then, his role includes developing and implementing training systems for both front and back-of-house as well as providing operational advice for clients. Joel is an accredited Food Waste Consultant and is currently completing a Bachelor of Arts & Health Science, majoring in Health Promotion & International Relations & Sustainability from Deakin University, as well as a Bachelor of Business majoring in People and Organisation.
Africa Center HK
Africa Center Hong Kong is a platform & creative hub that fosters value-creating interactions between African and non-African communities in Asia. They organize different programs to achieve three missions which is to rebrand blackness, to connect communities, and to raise black consciousness. The Africa Center is a turning point for the African communities within Hong Kong, and for those who wish to learn and integrate with the community not just within the city, but through out the African diaspora. The center is for everyone, where they can freely express themselves and their ideas.
In the 2023 HK SDG Summit, Africa Center Hong Kong will be hosting one of their very well known African Drum and Dance Workshops where participants will be able to indulge themselves in a different culture and learn more about the organization!

Jayme Ellis
Jayme Ellis is an experienced marketing professional with a creative mindset, seeking innovative ways to build a better future for the world. With a deep commitment to a sustainable lifestyle, Jayme’s work as Community and Programs Manager at LUÜNA promotes the importance of making daily choices that don’t compromise our planet. LUÜNA is a community-driven, purpose-led organisation originating in Hong Kong, now with a reach that spans the world. LUÜNA’s community has always been at the very heart of what they do. Together, they are shifting the narrative around menstruation, demanding better for our bodies and the earth.
LUÜNA Naturals' mission is to change the way our bodies are understood and cared for. Taking a holistic approach, we combine products, community and education, supporting women and all menstruating people to be confident and well, every day of our lives. When it comes to being eco-conscious, we recognise our industry has so far to go. However at LUÜNA, ecological considerations guide every decision we make with the goal of safeguarding our planet for future generations to come.
In their workshop: Little Green Steps: Sustainable Personal Care Choices, you'll be involved in analyzing how we can choose alternatives that are better for the planet, as well as our bodies. Considering ways to tread more lightly on the planet and use fewer resources when caring for ourselves and our families.

Plastic Free Seas
Dana Winograd
Dana has lived in HK for over 26 years and first got involved with environmental issues in 2007 when she helped drive recycling in Discovery Bay where she lives. Seeing that it would take more than recycling to help solve the problem of plastic marine pollution, Dana joined PFS from the beginning to help promote change in people’s use of plastic through education and action. She has delivered hundreds of talks on waste reduction and personal behaviour change to students of all ages, and has been invited as a guest speaker by many corporate and community groups since 2013.
Plastic Free seas is an organisation that teaches not only about the problems but also the solutions people need to take on and push for, to reduce the scourge of plastic pollution in Hong Kong and beyond. Have you ever thought about starting a campaign but didn't know where to begin? Do you think that 5 million plastic beverage bottles going to landfill in Hong Kong is shocking, and we need to do something about it?
Join with Plastic Free Seas to create an impactful campaign with a group of motivated students to ban plastic water bottles from being sold in schools

Koru Consulting
James Bishop and Carol Lin
James Bishop from Koru Consulting, in partnership with a very Kiwi social enterprise, will run a short version of the Bead & Proceed workshop. You will explore the SDGs through discussion and by creating your very own Bead Keychain, painted in the colours of the SDGs that are the most meaningful to you. It’s a creative way to explore the UN’s framework for change, and has been a proven method for engagement and deeper dialogue. But even the Beads themselves tell a great story about sustainability. All the kits are designed and handmade by the amazing people from ‘Silence'. Silence is an organisation located in Kolkata, India and provides safe and quality employment for adults have hearing, speaking or physical disabilities (a group often marginalised in Indian society - SDG 10).

HandsOn Hong Kong
Fiona Barker
HandsOn Hong Kong is a local charity with the mission to empower everyone in Hong Kong to volunteer. Their team develops service programs in partnership with the city’s under-served non-profit organizations and connects them with the volunteer manpower they need to achieve their mission. Each month, HandsOn runs 200 volunteer activities as a free public service, supporting over 100 frontline non-profits. These volunteers deliver food packages to people without jobs; build the confidence and communication skills of children with special needs; show care for lonely elderly; support mistreated domestic workers; show kindness to people experiencing homelessness, and much more. Every day of the year, HandsOn provides vital behind-the-scenes assistance to other charities, serving as an extension of their teams and enabling them to outsource their volunteer management at no cost.
Fiona oversees the organisation's communications, using creative marketing and storytelling to drive volunteer engagement and further our charity's mission. She has over 10 years’ expertise in Comms and PR within the corporate sector and hands-on experience of marrying community investment initiatives with employee engagement to deliver real, purposeful company ‘Giving Back’ programs. A passionate traveller and volunteer, Fiona has lent a hand to grassroots communities in three continents, including Africa, Asia and Europe. She holds a BA (Hons) degree in Journalism and believes that effective, powerful storytelling can change the world. Join us in Fiona's workshop to learn about finding your purpose and taking that first step to make an impact to your comminity!
